Scavengers of the
Slaughtered Sacrifices

Don MacGregor (w) | Gene Colon (a)

MacGregor (Zorro) and Colon (Tomb of Dracula) is a dream-team of comic book talent, but this one sadly misses the mark. MacGregor concocts a horrific villain and a worthy ripped-from-society plot, as Norvell Page might, but his Dick and Nita are colorless and The Spider's modernized getup -- based on the dashing pulp coverboy -- is equally generic. And talk about lack of character, Ram Singh and Jackson aren't even in it! Colon's grey pencil art is moody to be sure, but it isn't hard-hitting when it needs to be. And while generally his unique page designs are exciting and propulsive, here they are too crowded by MacGregor's pulpy/wordy approach to scripting. There is still lots to recommend here, but as a Spider fan I was left wanting.
