(January-February 1975) The Seventies were a crazy time. Someone at Pocket Books had the BRILLIANT idea to modernize all the references in The Spider, take out all the The's, and repackage him as SPIDER -- a heroic men's adventure hero in the mold of Mac Bolan or Remo Williams. White turtlenecks must have been big that year, because Operator #5 was "reimagined" into one as well for Freeway's reprints. As wrong-headed as the cover illustrations are, though, they are still gorgeously painted by the reliable Robert Maguire.
